You know the value of the LVI in developing versatile leaders. Now, there is a version adapted to the unique needs of Individual Contributors—an important population of talent who do not have formal authority yet still have to bend and flex in order to successfully collaborate with and influence others.
Building versatility among those not in leadership roles enables you to build more agile and effective teams. Plus, you can identify potential leaders who demonstrate versatility in their current, non-managerial roles.
The core of the LVI remains. We have only made the changes required to make the instrument applicable to those who do not have responsibility for supervising other employees or managing a team, function, or department. For instance:
Slight changes to the definitions and components of the behavior model:
Slight revisions to behavior items reflect working with rather than supervising others. For example:
Assumes authority - makes it clear that they are in charge.
Delegates authority - gives people plenty of room to show initiative.
Steps up - takes the initiative to get things done.
Steps back - gives other people room to contribute.
Zooms out - leads from a high-level, big picture perspective.
On task - keeps the organization focused on established priorities.
Acts strategically - spends the majority of time on high impact, high priority tasks.
On task - stays focused on established priorities.
We have also revised the norms so that you can compare the person to a large sample of Individual Contributors.
The assessment method and the organization of the feedback report are the same as the Leader Version of the LVI. The Individual Contributor version will be familiar and immediately accessible to anyone who has used the LVI to develop leaders.
